The beauty of a woman is beheld within her eyes

Eyes can speak and our thoughts are reflected through our eyes.

 The skin around the eyes is very thin and delicate as compared to other parts of the body. Any changes happening in the deeper layers of the skin are easily visible on the surface. Dark circles are a common problem with both genders and all age groups.

Causes

Under eye circles can be caused by a number of different things:

lack of sleep, seasonal allergies, sun exposure, ageing, smoking, allergies to ingredients of make-up, hair dyes, some medicated applications. Stress (physical or mental) is a major killer of healthy glowing skin. Iron deficiency can also lead to pigmentation around the eyes. In a certain subset of people, dark circles run in the family.

Prevention                                                                                                             

  • Sleep for at least seven to eight hours every day.
  • Try to ease your stress.
  • Get treated for allergies, hay fever, asthma, and nasal congestion too. Abstain from rubbing your eyes all the time.
  • Avoid eye cosmetics if you are allergic to them and be gentle when cleansing and removing eye make-up.
  • Always moisturise the skin under the eye. Dry, dehydrated skin will make the under eye area dull and more prone to allergies.
  • Glares protect your eyes as well as the skin around the eyes from the harsh effects of UV rays.
  • Have a diet rich in iron and vitamin C. Dried beans, dried    fruits such as raisins and apricots, eggs (especially egg yolks), iron-fortified cereals, liver, lean red meat, pork, poultry, seafood, dark green leafy vegetables, peas are rich in iron. Include citrus fruits, tomatoes, peppers, melon, and spinach for vitamin C.

Treatment

  • When choosing a cream or serum to reduce dark circles around the eyes, look for vitamins C, E, K or retinol in the ingredients. Also, make sure it contains moisturisers and antioxidants to keep the thin skin protected.
  • Glycolic and arginine peels do help in reducing the dark circles.
  • Resistant pigmentation under the eyes can be treated with Q-Switched Nd:YAG Laser.
  • The best treatment for sunken eyes is hyaluronic acid filler injection. This evens out the hollowness and reduces the shadow, which is cast due to sunken eyes, thereby reducing the appearance of dark circles.

 

 

There are a number of home therapies or quick fixes for that ‘refreshed’ look, that have been followed by one and many through the years. Application of cucumber slices over the eyes and relaxing for ten minutes is definitely an all-time favourite, as is putting a cool tea bag. Although, application of almond oil, raw potato grind, tomato, and coconut oil are common practices, these do not help in reducing dark circle. Yes, they may make you feel refreshed, but they don’t help solve your problem.

Dr Neetika Paul breaks down skincare into easy to follow, effective steps that we love and promise to follow. Glowing skin, here we come!

1. "Use a gentle cleanser appropriate for your skin type."

Dry skin needs a cleanser with a moisturizing base and what better than oil based cleansers that mimic the natural oils on your skin. For oily skin, look for a cleanser that removes excessive oil without over drying the skin. AN oil-free, foaming cleanser like Neutrogena Oil-Free Cleanser works well for oily skin. Combination skin requires a cleanser right that is not too greasy or too drying. 

2. "Apply sunscreen with an SPF 30 multiple times during the day."

Sunscreen should be applied 30 minutes before sun exposure all over the whole face and neck. Reapply every four hours if you are out in the sun. If you are sweating or are swimming, reapply every two hours. As a general measure, you need at least one table spoon of sunscreen for your face and one shot glass full of sunscreen for the body. Look for a sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection. UVB is strongest during summer and effects the outer skin layer, causing sunburns with excessive exposure. UVA on the other hand is not seasonal and effects deeper skin layers causing long term, extensive damage. Don't forget your lips, a lip balm with SPF is a must-have.

3. "Add Vitamin C serum of 6-10% strength once a day to your skin care routine."

URTICARIA

Acute urticaria: 

Hives lasting less than six weeks. The most common causes are certain foods, medications, or infections. Insect bites and internal disease may also be responsible.The most common foods that cause hives are nuts, chocolate, fish, tomatoes, eggs, fresh berries, and milk. Fresh foods cause hives more often than cooked foods. Certain food additives and preservatives may also be to blame.

Drugs that can commonly cause hives and angioedema include aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen, high blood pressure drugs (ACE inhibitors), or painkillers such as codeine.

 

Chronic urticaria:

Hives lasting more than six weeks. The cause of this type of hives is usually more difficult to identify than those causing acute urticaria. For most people with chronic urticaria, the cause is impossible to determine. In some cases, though, the cause may be thyroid disease, hepatitis, infection, or cancer.

 

Physical urticaria:

 Hives caused by direct physical stimulation of the skin -- for example, cold, heat, sun exposure, vibration, pressure, sweating, and exercise. The hives usually occur right where the skin was stimulated and rarely appear elsewhere. Most of the hives appear within one hour after exposure.

 

 Dermatographism: 

This is a common form of physical urticaria where hives form after firmly stroking or scratching the skin. These hives can also occur along with other forms of urticaria.

Although there is a genetic factor to sagging and early wrinkling of skin, especially in women, there are steps you can take to slow down sagging of the face and neck. Like all anti-aging preventative plans, the earlier you start the better results you get. If the older women in your family, especially your mother, had early sagging and wrinkling, then it is even more important that you start early.

The best way to slow down this progression is prevention:
